Ever heard the name Blaise Pascal? This genius mathematician tried to build a perpetual motion machine in the 17th century. He failed as you can guess, but his machine prototype inspired another genius (and anonymous) entrepreneur. He called the machine “roulle” (which means small wheel in French) and added numbers on it, which turned the machine into a casino game. And a very successful one – roulette game gained popularity almost instantly. It became the “game of nobles” because card games were considered as for the common people only. No intellectual could lay hands on some “dirty” cards and calls himself a noble, right?
Roulette game is born in France and all of the French casinos loved it. They added a “00” sign on to the roulette wheel too, which raised the odds of winning. (Today, this form of roulette is known as the “European Roulette”.) American casinos decided that there is no need to raise those odds and removed the sign – that is why we call that version “American Roulette” nowadays. Roulette is a fun and classy game; it is filled with winnings too if you know how to play.
List of Roulette Games:
In roulette, you have lots of betting options. Take a look at the roulette table, it is filled with numbers and colors, right? You can bet either for the exact number of the pocket the ball will land in, or a small range of pockets or for the pocket color. (You can also bet for whether the winning number is odd or even.) As you can guess, your winning odds are much higher when you bet on for the pocket color, basically 50 -50. Same goes for the oddity/even bet – these are the ones which require only luck. And since the odds are higher, they don’t pay that much.
If you are betting on the pocket numbers, that’s where the “real” roulette starts. The pockets are numbered from 0 to 36. You can keep betting on those numbers until you hear the dealers say “no more bets / rien ve na plus”. Winning odds are lower here, but the payouts are much higher. Believe it or not – this is a mathematical game and you can increase your odds by simply following a roulette strategy.
How to Play Roulette
Let’s start saying by here are no “guaranteed” systems for winning at roulette. This is a betting game (the same as online poker) that relies on patterns and in the long run, you will always lose money. In other words, you may win; but if you keep playing, you will lose at some point. Ever dreamt about playing roulette with a computer who does all the necessary calculations for you? A guy named Claude Shannon did that – he played the entire game using a computer to predict the winning pockets. He won 3.8 million dollars in a single day – which resulted with all of the casinos in the world changing their wheel systems, lowering the odds. Nowadays, it is much harder to predict the winning pocket, even with a computer. But there are still “tricks” which raise your winning odds.
The first trick is based on mathematical analyzes – after each loss, add one more unit for the next bet and after each win, deduct one unit from your bet. For example, if you lose 1 dollars play with 2 dollars. If you win this time, your next bet must be 1 dollars. This is called the D’alembert system and in the long run, it works.
Another trick is called the Labouchere system. A series of numbers in a line are used in this method. Basically, you add the numbers at the front and end of the line to determine the size of the next bet. If you win, you cross out the numbers and continue to work on the smaller line. If you lose, add your previous bet to the end of the line and start working on the longer line. The thing is, in the long run, this system always fails. So if you win, you need to stop playing.
Other than these… No, there are no “systems” for roulette games. But since we are talking about how to play roulette, let’s take a look at to the common etiquette, shall we? Never toss your chips on to the table, gently place them. Do not reach to your chip if it is not in the correct place, ask the dealer to do that. Do not eat something at the roulette table – drinking is allowed. And never, never argue with the dealer about which bets have been taken.
