Baccarat

Baccarat is probably the oldest card game around, it was first documented in the 14th century, during the King Henry IV era. The word baccarat means “zero” in Italian, so it is thought that the birthplace is in Italy – nobody knows the exact date or who. It was the most popular card game during the French revolution, and for some reason, nobles loved it in that era. Baccarat quickly expanded to all of the casinos in Europe and turned into a premier casino game. Today, it is still known as the “card game of the intellectuals”. Or, you can call it the choice of Mr. James Bond – remembered the Casino Royale movie?

Baccarat card game has lots of variations (the same as tavla games), and each of them requires a different skill set. First, there is Punto Banco (known as the American baccarat game) based on pure luck – requires no skill or strategy. Chemin de Fer (known as chemmy) and Baccarat Banque (known also as a deux tableaux) variations are very different, they require an analytic mind and some serious strategies. In other words, baccarat rules and baccarat strategy change with each version.

As we mentioned above, the rules of baccarat differs for every variation. In general, these are:

Punto Banco: This is the most played version of baccarat in the USA casinos, both physical and online. Usually, you will see only the “baccarat” title on the table. This version is played against the dealer (known as the “Banco”) and has fixed drawing rules. (You can see these rules written on the table.) 8 decks of cards used in this version and there are three possible outcomes; Player (punto) wins, Dealer (banco) wins, or a tie. Each side tries to get a card total of 8 or 9 in the first two cards dealt. If a side gets this total, he/she wins. If not, fixed drawing rules are applied. These are;

  • If the player has a card total of 0-5, he must draw a third card.
  • If the player has a card total of 6-7, he must stand.
  • If the player drew 2 or 3 as the third card, the dealer must stand with 5-7.
  • If the player drew 4 or 5 as the third card, the dealer must stand with 6-7.
  • If the player drew 6 or 7 as the third card, the dealer must stand with 7.
  • If the player drew an 8 as the third card, the dealer must stand with 3-7.
  • If the player drew an ace, 9, 10 or a face card as the third card, the dealer must stand with 4-7.

Sounds a little weird, we know, but don’t worry, all of these rules are explained on the gaming tables. Punto Banco is a high-roller game, minimum bets usually start at 25 dollars and goes as high as 500 dollars. That is why they are usually played in separate and special rooms – Punto Banco pays more than the poker.

Chemin de Fer: This is the original baccarat and the most popular one in European casinos. Six deck of cards are used in this version and there are no separate dealers. At least four people are needed for Chemin de Fer and at each hand, a different player becomes the dealer. Being the dealer is a serious business in this version because all of the players bet against you. The dealer deals four cards face down and takes two for him/her. The remaining two held in common by the remaining players. First, the remaining players choose the “champion” amongst them, the one with the strongest hand. Then, this champion plays against the dealer. The goal is to have a card total of 8 or 9 – this is the winning combination. If neither side has this total, they are free to get a third card or not. At the end, the hand with the highest card total wins.

Baccarat Banque: This is the same as the Chemin de Fer with one different rule: dealer stays the same as long as he/she keeps winning. The dealer only changes if he/she loses.
